Itinerary

DAY 1: Half day trek to Eco-Bungalow/ Homestay

Meet your guide and enjoy a 35-minute ride through the countryside to our trekking start point.

When you arrive at Ban Phonexay, you’ll begin the 4-hour trek to the Khmu and Hmong village of Nong Khuay that will take you deep into the jungle, over streams, under bamboo forests and up steep hills that offer magnificent views of Laos.

You'll have a picnic lunch along the way. When you reach Nong Khuay, your tour guide will show you to your Eco Bungalow or introduce you to your host family for the night.

If time permits, trek 30 minutes to Tom Douk cave. Your guide will tell you more about this hidden cavern as you explore its dark terrain.

Back in the village, settle in to your Eco Bungalow or homestay and explore the village to get to know your hosts - learn a few words of their language, try your hand at cooking traditional meals or share some pictures you’ve taken of your trip in Laos on your digital camera. Enjoy dinner in the village.

Day 2: Jungle Trek part II

Have breakfast with your hosts in the morning. The village Nong Khuay translates to “buffalo lake,” and you can hike to this famous lake afterwards. (Note: Visit to the lake only during rainy season from July – December).

Then head out on the trail again to the Hmong village of Long Lao Mai. It’s a 4-hour hike but you’ll be able to stop along the way for lunch and soak in the stunning natural scenery around you.

At Long Lao Mai, your guide will show you the Eco Bungalow, your private lodge for the night. Then, take a tour of the community where you’ll meet some of your neighbors.

A few villagers sell beautiful hand-made bracelets and other handicrafts to earn supplemental income that supports their main livelihood as subsistence farmers. The handicrafts make unique and meaningful souvenirs.

Dinner is served in the sala outside under the stars - or you may share a meal with villagers in their home. After a traditional Hmong meal, unwind in the Eco Bungalow and rest after the last few days of trekking in the comfort of your own room.

Day 3: Jungle Trek to the Waterfalls

After a hearty breakfast, trek 3 hours through lush jungle to one of Luang Prabang’s favorite sites, the Kuang Si Waterfall. Take lunch in the jungle on the way and don’t rush at the falls.

The Kuang Sii Falls, sometimes spelled Kuang Xi or known as Tat Kuang Si Waterfalls, is a three-tier waterfall about 29 kilometres (18 mi) south of Luang Prabang.

These waterfalls are a favorite side trip for tourists in Luang Prabang. The falls begin in shallow pools atop a steep hillside. These lead to the main fall with a 60 metres (200 ft) cascade.

The falls are accessed via a trail, the water collects in numerous turquoise blue pools as it flows downstream.

The many cascades result is typical of travertine of waterfalls.

Swimming is permitted only in marked areas and modest swimsuits are most appropriate, with local people swimming fully clothed.

There are picnic spots, public toilets and changing rooms. Food stalls outside the park entrance sell baguettes, fruit shakes and skewers of grilled meat, ideal for a picnic, in addition there are a handful of small restaurants and souvenir shops.

Visit the Asiatic bear sanctuary halfway between the park entrance and the Kuang Si Falls is the Asiatic Black Bear rescue centre, which houses a couple of dozen animals rescued from the hands of poachers and traffickers. The bears are in large enclosures with trees and some simple toys like tire swings. An elevated viewing platform has been built near the enclosure so visitors can observe these endangered animals.

After a refreshing afternoon at the waterfall we’ll pick you up and you will experience the new Lao Buffalo dairy that produces cheese and a range of delicious dairy products.

The diary provides income and a sustainable future for the Lao people involved. Learn how to milk a Buffalo, cuddle a Buffalo for the perfect selfie and try some incredible ice cream. The Buffalo may be the stars of the show but the playful pigs, chickens and cute rabbits are also plenty of fun for the young and young at heart!

We then return to Luang Prabang.
