2 DAYS TREK & HOMESTAY IN NONG KIEW & CULTURAL ACTIVITIES & TADMOK WATERFALL – NKTNL-GL1047

This tour takes you through the beautiful mountainous jungle in Nong Khiaw for a focused homestay and cultural experience. The first day of trekking is designed to be short so that guests can spend more time in the multi-ethnic village where they can learn about local loom weaving, fishing, Lao massage, bamboo basket weaving, and the Baci Ceremony.

Highlights are the overnight stay at a multi-ethnic village, trails along great landscape with trekking through bamboo forests. On the second day, an amazing trek and visit to Tadmok waterfall brings you to the Nam Ou River to conclude the tour with a scenic downriver boat ride back to Nong Khiaw.

Journey Insight

About the Clay School:

The clay school was built by 54 international volunteers who traveled to Laos in 2011, and local community members of Na Luang. The structure is made of clay (only the floor and columns are made of cement for structural purposes) from the ground on which the school was built, and the exterior was painted white to abide by local law. The clay school replaced the original bamboo and wooden school that was in disrepair, and now provides a better learning environment for the local school children of Na Luang village.

Books, pencils, desks and other school materials were graciously donated by travelers and volunteers.

We can arrange a visit to the school during your tour, but please note that the visit depends on the availability of the village leader and the school teachers. We do not want to disrupt classes (if your visit is during the school year)

Day 1 is 6 km, medium-level trekking normally taking about 1.5 hours.
Day 2 is 7 km, medium-level hiking normally taking about 5.5 hours

DAY 01

MORNING HIKE TO VILLAGE: CULTURE IMMERSION AND HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES (L/D)

Explore nature, Lao cultures, villages, mountain trails & cultural activities in Nong Khiaw, Laos.

After a short ride we start walking small paths past rice paddies and through preserved forest with huge trees and great views and sneaking between high-rising mountains. Colorful rice fields (seasonal) and gardens guide our way through this amazing scenery. Spend only about 1.5 hours on an easy walk to arrive at the Hmong, Khmu, and Lao Leum village. Explore the village with your guide and visit the Tiger Trail built Clay School operational since 2011.

Your guide will give you an introduction to the local traditions, the Lao lowland style of weaving and other activities. A walk around the village can tell you many stories and shows you the difference between the ethnic groups.

We then prepare ourselves for an overnight stay in this remote village and enjoy the local “cuisine”.

Take your time to explore the place by yourself in the evening or just play with the children.

This day of the tour has been designed so that you arrive at the village with extra time to explore, interact, and engage in hands-on activities.

The low-cost, but engaging activities (see below) are organized by the locals, directly benefit the Hmong and Khmu people leading the activity, and have been made so that you can choose the activities on-the-spot.

Indulge in this rare opportunity, designed into this tour, to interact closely with hill-tribe inhabitants, learn some of their crafts, and see their way of life.

Your local Lao guide will help translate and broaden the experience with their own stories and knowledge.

DAY 02

JUNGLE TREK, WATERFALL, AND NAM OU CRUISE (B/L)

Enjoy breakfast before departing the village by local trail to the Nam Ou River on one of the most spectacular routes in the area taking you through a canyon pass with mountains rising on both sides. Enjoy the picturesque and refreshing Tadmok waterfall after a short boat ride and 1 hour trek and visit a Khmu village nestled on the banks of the Nam Ou River and see its gardens. Along the way, we serve another Lao style lunch before we return to Nong Khiaw by boat. Enjoy the sceneries!!

Optional activities in Naa luang Village may include:

1. Bamboo basket weaving approximately 50,000 Kip
2. Loom Weaving approximately 50,000 Kip
3. Lao massage approximately 50,000 Kip
4. Baci Ceremony approximately 200,000 Kip

Note: as the activities are elective, guests should bring some money to pay for activities on the spot that they choose to participate.
